Conditions We Treat

Comprehensive Care of Heart Conditions

Heart Doctors in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey

Cardiology Consultants of North Morris in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, is a cardiovascular specialty practice devoted to treating a wide variety of vascular and heart conditions, as well as related symptoms, including:

Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation, or heart flutter, is the most common type of irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) – one that is beating too quickly, with the upper and lower chambers of the heart out of synch with one another. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and more. It is also called a-fib or AF.
Cardiac Arrhythmia
Irregular heartbeats – whether too fast, too slow, or just atypical – are known as cardiac arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are caused by a disruption of the electrical impulses that coordinate the beating of the upper and lower chambers of the heart.
Cardiogenic Shock
Cardiogenic shock is considered a medical emergency. It occurs when the heart is suddenly unable to pump the amount of blood your body requires – and it is fatal if not treated immediately. It usually occurs as the result of a severe heart attack.
Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a weakened, stiffened, or otherwise damaged heart muscle, which makes it difficult for the heart to efficiently pump blood. It can lead to arrythmias and heart failure. Cardiomyopathy is sometimes referred to as heart muscle disease.

Carotid Artery Disease

Carotid artery disease occurs when the vessels delivering blood to your head (carotid arteries) become clogged with plaque and narrowed. If blood flow becomes obstructed, it can cause a stroke. Cholesterol-lowering drugs and blood thinners are commonly used to improve blood flow in patients with this condition. Surgery may be necessary if the arteries are significantly narrowed.

Chest Pain
If you are experiencing chest pain, how it feels to you may run the gamut: a sharp, stabbing pain; dull ache; squeezing sensation; or even a burning feeling. Cardiovascular conditions that can cause chest pain include coronary artery disease, pericarditis, or a heart attack.
Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure, or CHF, is a chronic condition in which the heart is too weak to pump blood effectively.
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease, or CAD, is the most common type of heart disease. In fact, it is the leading cause of death for men and women in the US. It occurs when the plaque buildup in the arteries delivering blood to the heart become narrowed, and blood flow is restricted. If blood flow is obstructed, it can cause a heart attack.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in deep veins – usually in the leg. This is a serious condition because if the blood clot breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal.
Dizziness
Dizziness, the feeling of being lightheaded or unbalanced is a common symptom in patients with heart disease such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, atrial fibrillation, heart valve disease, and more.
Edema
Edema is any swelling due to injury or inflammation. When it occurs in the legs due to fluid buildup, it may indicate congestive heart failure.
Endocarditis
Endocarditis is an infection of the heart valve in the heart's inner lining. It occurs when bacteria travel to the area from the bloodstream.
Fainting
Fainting is a sudden, temporary loss of consciousness; it's also called syncope. Cardiovascular conditions such as when the heart beats too slowly (bradycardia) or too quickly (tachycardia) may trigger fainting.
Heart Attack
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, either by a blood clot or plaque buildup in the arteries. Also called myocardial infarction, a heart attack is a medical emergency. Without blood, heart tissue begins to die. Symptoms of a heart attack are tightness or pain in the chest, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath.
Heart Murmur
A heart murmur is a sound heard between heartbeats; often, it's a whooshing or swishing sound. Heart murmurs can be harmless or may indicate a more serious heart condition such as heart valve disease or a birth defect affecting the heart.
Heart Valve Disease
Heart valve disease are conditions in which any or all the heart's four valves are damaged. The valves – mitral, tricuspid, aortic, and pulmonic – ensure proper flow of blood through the heart.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, occurs when the force of blood traveling through the arteries is too high. A blood pressure measurement is a look at blood volume and the resistance it meets as it travels through blood vessels while the heart is pumping.
Mitral Valve Prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs when the mitral valve, which carries blood from the left atrium of the heart to the left ventricle, fails to close properly and bulges back into the left atrium. It can affect the heart's ability to efficiently pump blood, causing symptoms such as an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath.
Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
The one-two punch of obesity and having obstructive sleep apnea can lead to a knock-out: heart disease. That's because in obese people, fatty tissue accumulates and can obstruct breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), which is associated with heart problems such as high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke.
Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the membrane that covers the heart. Causes include heart attack or infection. Symptoms include sharp chest pains that worsen with deep breathing or lying down.
Peripheral Artery Disease
Peripheral artery disease or PAD is a common circulatory condition in which blood flow from the heart to the limbs of the body is restricted due to narrowed blood vessels. PAD is also sometimes called peripheral vascular disease. Common symptoms include painful cramps in the arms or legs after activity, as well as numbness, weakness, and coldness in the limbs.
Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in the arteries that go to the lungs. This chronic, progressive disease makes your heart have to work harder and may increase the likelihood of developing blood clots.
Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath is difficulty getting enough air into your lungs. It can be caused by a variety of health problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
